There is an appealing story to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the border from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den betting is not permitted. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a generally small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent spot, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing capital acquired from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a couple of limitations constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; however, funding sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are supposedly necessary to cross, there are methods around this, as is true of many border crossings.

The initial Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship gambling den, contains 150 one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga river boat is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of 150 one armed bandits and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slots and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive resort and hotel compound that features numerous amenities aside from the gambling hall, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and 88 table games.
