There is a fascinating story to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the border from next door Thailand, where gambling den gambling is not legal. Eight gambling dens are established in a relatively small space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect area, a 3 to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; although, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and although visas are allegedly required to cross, there are methods around this, as is accurate of most border crossings.
The first Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored boat gambling den, contains 150 slot machines and sixty tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are 150 slots and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slot machine games and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 table games, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel compound that highlights a number of amenities aside from the gambling hall, which provides 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and eighty eight tables.
